Chicken worm egg counts - When did you last worm your backyard chickens?

                                               - Would you rather know if your hens actually have worms instead of blindly using chemicals?

                                               - Think your hens are healthy but you'd like to make sure?

           Follow the instructions below.

Chicken (poultry) Worm Counts

A worm investigation can be done on individual chickens / ducks etc or a mixed sample from multiple birds.

A mixed sample should preferably only be 4 or 5 birds. If it's more than that, the portion tested would only contain a tiny fraction from each hen.

So if you have 8 birds we would recommend testing 2 mixed samples.

 What to do -

Collect a fresh sample of poo from under different parts of  the perch in the morning / or watch when you let your hens out and collect fresh samples when they poo.

  • If you are collecting individual samples, about the size of a large marble or a conker is fine.
  • For a mixed sample, collect a decent pinch from each of 4 or 5 poos.

They do need to be as fresh as possible. Poos sitting on the ground will soon get contaminated with wild bugs.

You can use a disposable glove or put your hand inside a small plastic bag , pinch your samples and then turn the bag inside out.
